After growth in a crystal growth furnace, the ingot is cropped and cut into blocks. Ingot grinding machines then flatten the faces and round or chamfer the edges, giving the block a true shape and fewer edge chips before slicing. The grinding wheel is the consumable that does that work. Next the block is glued and sliced on a wire saw with cutting wire and silicon cutting fluids, and the wafers move on to wafer handling. Resin-bond wheels cut freely and leave a finer surface; metal-bond wheels hold their form longer and suit heavy stock removal. Many lines rough with one and finish with the other. Record removal rate, flatness and squareness, edge chipping and subsurface damage, which can start cracks during slicing; the breakage and throughput note helps you count those losses the same way for every wheel. Track wheel life and dressing intervals over a meaningful run, and watch coolant condition, because a loaded wheel burns or chips the surface.
