Selection considerations

What laser doping does on a TOPCon line

Laser doping drives extra dopant into selected areas of the wafer to create a selective emitter under the future contact fingers. On a TOPCon route the source is the borosilicate glass layer left by boron diffusion furnaces, so the laser step follows diffusion directly. Upstream sit texturing equipment and the furnace itself, for example NAURA's vertical diffusion furnace or its horizontal multi-zone furnace, both from NAURA. Downstream come the tunnel oxide and polysilicon layers on deposition systems, such as a tube LPCVD system or a tube ALD passivation system, and finally metallization equipment.

The machine listed in this class

The class currently lists one tool: the HL-KZPCNS-HO automatic TOPCon laser doping machine from Hymson Laser. It dopes through the BSG layer, uses vision positioning to place the pattern and moves wafers automatically. Hymson describes the process as lossless and productive; your own sample run on your wafers decides whether it meets your target.

When you request a quote, treat 182 mm and 210 mm as two separate throughput cases. Ask Hymson to write down the BSG thickness range and wafer condition its recipe assumes, because a change in the diffusion recipe upstream can change the laser result. The description is written for TOPCon; if you run HJT or back-contact cells too, read the guide on cell route compatibility before ordering one tool for both. Plan a sample run at Hymson and a repeat at your plant along the lines of the FAT and SAT guide.

Matching the pattern to the contacts

A selective emitter only pays off when the printed fingers land on the doped lines. Bring the screen layout and the metallization paste you plan to use into the discussion, and ask how the laser vision system registers the pattern so the printer can align to it later. Agree which reference marks both machines use, and test registration on your own wafers as the machine vision guide suggests.

Handling and neighbouring laser steps

Wafers after diffusion are fragile and may sit in carriers for some time. Check that the loading interface matches your cell material handling carriers, and count broken wafers during the trial alongside cycle time; the guide on breakage, cycle time and throughput explains how to read those numbers together. If you also need edge isolation or other patterning, look at laser scribing tools separately; a doping laser is set up for its own process window, and a second laser task needs its own trial.

Plan the equipment scope

For solar cell laser doping equipment, begin your enquiry with cell architecture, doping layer and wafer format. Request a configuration-specific quotation and agree on pattern registration, recipe limits and the stated throughput test conditions. Each listing shows the published values and the questions to confirm.

Selection guide

Laser doping selection is tied to the cell architecture, source layer and required pattern. Equipment capacity should be stated for the actual wafer format and recipe. A process-specific machine is not a general-purpose substitute for a different doping or laser treatment step.

Inputs to prepare before shortlisting

Cell route and source layer
Describe the intended cell process and the incoming doping layer. Request written confirmation of the material and recipe scope supported by the offered machine.
Wafer and registration
State format, handling condition and pattern references. Ask how vision positioning, transport and recipe changeover are combined in the production cycle.
Process outcome
Identify the measurements the process owner uses to judge doping and damage. Allocate sample testing and data retention in the quotation.

Make quotations comparable

Compare capacity only for matching wafer dimensions and recipe conditions. Ask whether transfer, inspection and changeover are included. Compare electrical or process results separately from the nominal transport rate.

Plan the acceptance test

Use representative wafers and agreed pattern references. Record the recipe, registration measurements and process-owner test results. Include start-up and recipe-change checks where the project requires more than one format.

Avoid this comparison mistake

Do not detach a throughput figure from its wafer format or infer that a TOPCon-specific description establishes HJT or other process compatibility.
