PV ribbon and busbar materials

Find machinery by production stage and the requirements of your line.

Selection considerations

What ribbon and busbar do

Interconnection ribbon joins neighbouring cells into a string, and busbar joins the strings into a circuit that ends at the junction box. Ribbon is fed and soldered on a cell stringer; busbar is laid and welded during layup, on stations such as the Yiheng busbar layup-welding station or SC-Solar automatic busbar welding. Both belong to module assembly. The ribbon lands on contacts printed with PV metallization materials, so cell pad design and ribbon choice should be settled together. Heat limits differ by route, and the guide to cell technology compatibility shows which cells call for low-temperature joining.

Three Yitong products, three jobs

All listed items come from Yitong Tech:

  • Flat interconnection ribbon with a copper core and Sn60Pb40 coating, for conventional soldered strings. Choose width and thickness to fit your pads.
  • Low-temperature round ribbon with a low-melting coating, for heat-sensitive cells and multi-wire layouts. Pick one alloy and one diameter and qualify it against your cell's thermal limit.
  • Ultrathin busbar with a light Sn60Pb40 coating, for string-to-string connection. Ask for the section drawing before trials.

Matching ribbon to your stringer

Ribbon behaviour on the machine affects yield and speed as much as the ribbon itself. Spool format, straightness and coating uniformity decide whether the stringer feeds without jams. Machines listed here, such as the Autowell MBB soldering stringer, the ConfirmWare MBB stringer and the Ooitech tabber stringer, each set their own limits on wire diameter, reel size and heating method. Ask the stringer maker which ribbon formats it has already run, and give the ribbon maker that list.

The guide on comparing cell stringer throughput shows why a stringer rate only means something for a named ribbon and cell. Use the same ribbon in every stringer trial so the comparison is fair.

Trial plan

Fix width or diameter, coating alloy, coating thickness and reel with the maker in writing. Run a stringing trial on your own cells, then measure peel strength under agreed conditions, look for cracked cells near joints, and check the joints again after lamination and thermal cycling. Once a ribbon passes, follow the material qualification guide to fix the approved specification and change notice.

Plan the equipment scope

Identify the production step, cell or module format and output unit before comparing equipment. Use the listed source, scope and specifications to prepare a configuration-specific enquiry. Missing values are left unspecified and do not count as exact filter matches.

Read equipment buying guides or prepare a sourcing brief.

Yitong ultrathin PV busbar

Yitong's ultrathin busbar is a copper strip with a thin 5±2 µm Sn60Pb40 coating, a 186°C fusion point and mechanical limits of its own. It ships on a 6 kg spool. The data sheet's size rows (≤50 mm and ≥0.03 mm) lack clear axis labels, so ask for a cross-section drawing before you fix width and thickness.

Yitong low-temperature round PV ribbon

Yitong's low-temperature round ribbon is a round interconnect wire with a finished diameter of Φ0.15–0.4 mm and a coating that melts between 118 and 165°C. It is meant for stringing where cells can take only limited heat. Ask Yitong which alloy matches each temperature, choose one diameter pair, and test it against your cell's thermal and handling limits.

Yitong flat PV interconnection ribbon

Yitong's flat PV ribbon has a copper substrate of at least 99.95% purity and a Sn60Pb40 coating with a listed 189°C fusion point. The webpage offers 0.15–0.25 mm thickness and 0.4–2.0 mm width, wound on 7 kg or 9 kg reels. Pick the cross-section against your cell pads and stringer, then agree a solderability trial before ordering.
