PROCUREMENT NOTES

Qualifying PV module materials: ageing claims, adhesion data and lot certificates

How to read supplier data for encapsulant, backsheet, ribbon, sealant, potting and junction boxes before it reaches a bill of materials.

By PVYard Editorial · Updated 2026-11-06

A material datasheet is a starting point

Module materials are usually bought from datasheets. Those sheets mix three kinds of information: property values measured on the material, ageing results from a specific test, and application statements. Each needs different checking. A bill-of-materials change that rests on the wrong kind of data can pass incoming inspection and fail years later in the field.

Ageing claims: which test, which construction

Module design qualification under IEC 61215-2 includes environmental sequences such as UV preconditioning, thermal cycling, humidity freeze and damp heat, the last commonly run for 1,000 hours at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity. These tests are performed on modules, not on a material sample in isolation. When a material supplier quotes a damp-heat or UV result, ask whether it was measured on the material, on a laminate coupon or on a full module, and which other materials were in that construction.

The listings in this directory show why. The FIRST F406P/F406PS EVA film is a UV-transmitting pair in the company's normal encapsulation film series, with published applications that include PERC and rear-side TOPCon; the buyer still needs to confirm which ageing data apply to its own cell and glass combination. For the Juner EB-cured backsheet, our page lists "which published ageing claims apply to the actual order" as an open question, because backsheet constructions vary by layer. For sealants, the Zhijiang JS-606 PLUS listing records that neither a full-module ageing result nor a current certificate for the model was available.

Adhesion and peel figures need their test conditions

A peel or adhesion value is meaningless without specimen width, peel angle, speed and substrate. The Yitong flat PV ribbon page makes the point directly: its published force value comes without the specimen width, peel angle, pulling speed or substrate behind it. For interconnection ribbon, the meaningful test is the joint made on the buyer's own cells at the buyer's line settings, which is why our page for the low-temperature round ribbon stops short of saying it suits every heterojunction line.

Curing materials add time to the picture. For junction-box potting, the Wynca EncapSil5202GW page asks how long the real potting depth takes to cure fully, and which tests show the module can then be handled, tested electrically and packed. A lab cure time at a thin section does not answer that.

Lot certificates and what they prove

Ask what a certificate covers. Some documents report general results for a product type; others report tests on the delivered lot. In metals purchasing these are commonly distinguished as a test report versus an inspection certificate tied to the batch, and the same distinction is useful for PV materials. The Corefra CF-SN crucible-coating powder listing advises asking for the certificate of the delivered lot and agreeing how oxygen, carbon and metal impurities are sampled. For silver powder, the Jingxin feedstock page advises preserving accepted sample data, the lot certificate of analysis and formulation records.

Junction boxes need both component approval and lot control. The Jiaming PV-JM807 junction box listing groups samples, packaging and storage, lot certificates, lead times and change-notification terms as items to agree. Change notification is easy to forget and important: a quiet change of resin, cable or diode can invalidate earlier qualification.

Storage and incoming inspection

Many materials age on the shelf. The Taihu TGWH5200 sheath compound page raises three storage questions: when the shelf life begins, how part-used material is handled and what packaging damage should lead to rejection. Encapsulant rolls, sealant cartridges and potting components all need the same rules, written into incoming inspection. IEC 62941, the quality-system standard for module manufacturing, places material selection and control alongside process validation for the same reason.

Testing materials in the buyer's process

The most reliable qualification combines supplier data with a controlled trial on the buyer's own line, followed by the module tests the buyer's certification depends on. Environmental chambers such as the Edeson ETH-1000LA are used for this kind of in-house check, though our listing notes that no loaded PV specimen performance has been reviewed. Record the material lots, the line settings and the results together, so that a later supplier change can be compared against the same baseline. The module assembly stage page lists all material classes in this directory, including cable components and junction boxes.
