PROCUREMENT NOTES

What to specify when sourcing a PV module laminator

Compare temperature control, vacuum conditions and production layout against the module recipe.

By PVYard Editorial · Updated 2026-11-06

Begin with the module recipe

A photovoltaic module laminator applies heat, vacuum and pressure as part of the encapsulation process. SC SOLAR describes bonding glass, cell strings, backsheet and other materials through melting and curing encapsulation films. The equipment specification therefore starts with the proposed material stack and process recipe, ahead of the external dimensions of the machine. The encapsulation film and backsheet you choose set much of that recipe, and the module material qualification guide explains how to test the stack.

Provide the supplier with the maximum module size, glass arrangement, encapsulant system and intended loading pattern. Ask which recipes and material combinations the proposed configuration supports. Treat a supplier's general temperature range as the machine's capability, and set the process recipe for each module construction in trials.

Read temperature specifications carefully

Temperature range, control accuracy and temperature uniformity are different measurements. SC SOLAR's laminator documentation lists a range from room temperature to 180°C, uniformity of ±1.5°C and control accuracy of ±1°C. Calowen's CLW-BT2787-D1 documentation lists a 30–180°C range and ±1°C temperature control. Read each statement against the supplier's own measurement conditions, and set the acceptance result in your trial.

Request the measurement locations, stabilization period, load condition and instrumentation used for the specified uniformity. Define the acceptance threshold for the actual working area. Include the intended production recipe when discussing warm-up, recovery and repeatability.

Define the vacuum test

Calowen states an ultimate vacuum range of 40–100 Pa for the listed model, while Shuogu's SGCY-A2658D page lists 40–150 Pa. The full evacuation cycle needs more than the ultimate vacuum figure. Ask how the value is measured, whether the chamber is loaded, how leakage is assessed and how long the relevant cycle stage takes.

Document utility requirements and the scope of the supplied vacuum equipment; the utilities and installation guide lists what to settle before the machine arrives. Specify monitoring, alarms, maintenance access and consumables. Judge process yield and installed-line performance from trial runs on representative modules.

Choose a layout and an acceptance method

SC SOLAR describes single-, double- and three-layer structures, different chamber arrangements, and oil or electric heating. Other listed designs include the HORAD three-chamber laminator and Yiheng's three-level automatic laminator. Compare configurations against available floor space, loading logistics and the proposed process sequence. Include upstream layup, downstream cooling, framing and handling in the line discussion, and see the module assembly stage for the equipment around it.

The sourcing brief should distinguish equipment supply, installation, recipe development, training and service. Ask the supplier to state what is included and what must be provided by the buyer. Agree on representative modules and a documented acceptance run before committing to a configuration; the FAT and SAT guide shows how to write it. Use this guide as a list of questions to ask, and confirm each cited manufacturer figure in your own factory trial. All listed machines sit under module laminators.

Turn a series catalogue into one offered machine

Write down one selected configuration for each quotation: working area, layers, chambers, loading method and heating arrangement. Ask for the corresponding drawing and equipment designation. Ask whether the largest working area, highest chamber count and the options you need can be combined in one machine. Confirm loading clearance, maintenance access and the actual module placement plan rather than relying on outside dimensions alone.

Give the process owner a separate recipe responsibility

The module recipe should identify the glass and other stack materials, encapsulant and representative input condition. Ask which party supplies and validates the proposed settings. Catalogue temperature or vacuum limits are equipment statements, not an encapsulation recipe. Define the laminate inspections and measurement methods needed for your modules with the process owner. The guide does not supply a universal time, pressure or temperature recipe and does not certify module quality.

Compare the full cycle under one boundary

Distinguish heating or dwell time from loading-to-unloading time and from a steady production sequence across multiple chambers. Ask whether loading equipment and operator actions are included. Keep the selected recipe, module placement and operating mode attached to the capacity calculation. Record how changeover, cleaning, alarms and interrupted cycles affect accepted output. Judge shift output from a full shift, not one good sample cycle.

Keep connected power and energy consumption separate

A power rating helps plan electrical installation; it is not energy per module. For an operating-energy comparison, ask for a measured boundary, meter method, production recipe and accepted output during the measurement. State whether warm-up, standby, auxiliary systems and heating services are included. If one offer uses oil heating and another uses electric heating, identify the entire site-system scope before comparing the energy figures. Mark unknown operating data as open questions in the quotation.

Plan records and abnormal-cycle decisions

Ask which temperatures, vacuum values, recipe identifiers and alarm events can be stored or exported. Link the records to trial cycles and samples. Decide how operators respond to interrupted cycles, loss of utilities or an alarm, and which product is quarantined for review. The CLW-BT2787-D1 source describes process-record features; these help build an acceptance plan; each module recipe still needs its own qualification run.

Use a purchase acceptance package

Combine the exact configuration sheet, layout and utility schedule with the process-owner measurement plan. Agree representative modules, loading method, record retention and the trial boundary. Allocate commissioning, training, maintenance access and spare-part responsibilities. Document exclusions and corrective actions before acceptance. Keep source statements distinct from measured trial results, and retain the supplier’s original model-specific units when transferring values to your RFQ.
