Utilities and installation requirements for PV manufacturing equipment
Power, compressed air, cooling, exhaust and floor space: how to turn catalogue declarations into an installation package.
By PVYard Editorial · Updated 2026-11-06
Declarations are not an installation design
Most PV equipment datasheets list a power figure, an air pressure and sometimes a footprint. These are declarations. They tell a buyer roughly what to prepare, but they are not a measured consumption curve or a site design. The Junxiang JX012 stringer listing says exactly this: utility declarations are not an installation design. The difference matters because utilities are usually the buyer's responsibility, and an undersized supply shows up as slow cycles and alarms long after the machine has been accepted.
Electrical supply
Ask for the connected load, the expected running load and the peak at start-up or heating, together with the supply voltage, phases and earthing arrangement. A laminator heating from cold draws very differently from one holding temperature. IEC 60204-1 sets general requirements for the electrical equipment of machines, including protective bonding and requirements for power drive systems. Asking which edition the supplier designs to, and for the documentation it requires, gives the electrical contractor something concrete to check.
The Calowen CLW-BT2787-D1 laminator is one of the few listings with substantial published utility and installation figures. Even there, our page recommends requesting the current drawing and utility revision, because figures change between machine generations.
Compressed air
Pneumatic grippers, cylinders and vacuum generators on layup and stringing equipment depend on clean, dry air. Pressure alone is not enough. ISO 8573-1 classifies compressed air purity separately for particles, water and oil, so a specification can name a class for each. Ask the supplier which classes its valves and vacuum components require, then size dryers and filters accordingly. The Confirmware AMS120CA stringer listing advises checking both air consumption and electrical loads against the utility schedule supplied with the machine.
Cooling, gases and exhaust
Cell process equipment adds cooling water, process gases, chemicals and exhaust. For texturing, the Robotechnik ET-V8000/15000 page advises asking for chemical, exhaust and utility documents that match the configuration actually quoted, plus maintenance information. For deposition, the SCNEW tube plasma deposition furnace page asks for gas, exhaust and utility documents for the quoted process, and for the name of whoever integrates the system on site. The Jinchen PERTOP PECVD listing makes clear that tube layout, capacity and utility limits are only fixed in a project proposal, not in the catalogue.
Process parts are affected too. Quartz tubes, boats and flow plates sit in the gas and exhaust path; the Aohui diffusion quartz tube listing treats the exhaust tube, flow plate and furnace door as separately specified items.
Space, foundations and access
Footprint drawings rarely include service clearance, material buffers or forklift routes. Large module equipment adds floor loading. The HORAD three-chamber laminator page advises checking the foundation and utility connections, along with measured process results, for the exact configuration offered, and the HORAD multilayer laminator page notes that shared utilities and service space are not defined in the published claims. For automated lines, the Benlong DC isolator line listing asks for the floor area, access routes, connected electrical load and air supply, none of which the product table states.
Who does what during installation
An installation package should state, item by item, who supplies and who connects: power to the main isolator, air to the inlet, cooling loops, exhaust ducting, network points, anchoring and levelling, rigging and lifting. The Calowen listing recommends resolving utilities, loading equipment, structural or site work, access and commissioning responsibilities before the order. The LEAD module solution page gives the same advice for a complete line: list each installation task and mark whether the supplier or the buyer carries it.
IEC 62381's split between factory tests and site tests is a convenient way to organise this. Anything that can only be checked once the buyer's utilities are connected belongs in the site acceptance test, with the utility conditions recorded alongside the results.
A short checklist
Before ordering, request the electrical single-line drawing and load table, the air demand with required purity classes, cooling and gas specifications, exhaust volumes and temperatures, the installation drawing with service clearances and floor loads, and a responsibility matrix for installation and commissioning. The module line class and the cell production stage page help identify which equipment in your project will need which services.
