Solar module assembly equipment

Stringing, layup, lamination, module assembly, encapsulation/cable materials and PV connector/switch manufacturing.

Selection considerations

From cells to a packed module

Module assembly is the largest stage in this directory. A typical sequence is stringing, layup, lamination, trimming, framing, junction-box fitting, curing, testing and packing. Write the module bill of materials and line layout into your brief before comparing stations, since every machine here is configured around them.

Stringing and layup

The cell stringer class lists four machines, including the ConfirmWare AMS120CA and the Autowell AM050EH/FH; the stringer throughput guide explains how to compare their rates. Layup systems come mostly from HORAD and SC SOLAR, for example SC SOLAR's vision-guided string layup. Ask how strings are placed, checked and reworked.

Lamination and finishing

Module laminators range from the Yiheng laboratory laminator to multi-chamber production machines; the laminator specification guide covers temperature and vacuum tests. After lamination, framing equipment such as the HORAD framing system and the stations in module production lines complete the module.

Materials that go into the module

Several classes here are materials, which need qualification as well as a price: encapsulation film, ribbon and busbar, junction-box components and potting materials. The module material qualification guide explains which ageing and adhesion data to request. For acceptance of the stations themselves, use the FAT and SAT guide. Completed modules are checked with equipment in testing and inspection.

Plan the equipment scope

Define the module recipe, cell format and interconnection design before sizing assembly equipment. A complete module-line quotation should identify the responsibilities at stringing, layup, lamination and subsequent handling. Compare machine speed only after defining its output unit and test material. Describe factory space, utilities, buffers and existing conveyors, then agree how commissioning and final acceptance will be demonstrated with representative production samples.

Read equipment buying guides or prepare a sourcing brief.

ICB lead bending

SC-Solar's ICB lead bender folds the module's output leads into position, three at a time, guided and checked by camera. The same station can apply high-temperature tape or cloth and stick a barcode label on the backsheet. The catalogue lists a 16-second cycle, 7.5 kW or less and glass from 1600–2500 × 900–1500 mm. Quote it with your lead drawing and the extras you need.

Second-glass flip and layup

SC-Solar's second-glass layup station lifts the rear glass by vacuum, turns it over 180° and lowers it onto the prepared stack of a double-glass module. Servo axes handle alignment and feeding, with long-edge feed and four-side alignment. The catalogue lists a 12-second cycle and glass from 1650–2600 × 950–1450 mm. Quote it with your coated faces and stack height.

Automatic string taping

SC-Solar's string taper sticks short tapes across neighbouring strings so the layout cannot shift, controlling where each tape goes and how hard it is pressed. The catalogue lists a 14-second cycle that includes infeed and outfeed, tape lengths from 12 to 25 mm, widths of 5–10 mm and four-side alignment. Results depend on your tape and cells, so trial both.

Insulation-sheet placement

SC-Solar's sheet placer cuts or punches small insulating pieces from roll stock, finds the target with a camera and sets each piece with a four-axis robot. It can also stick a barcode on the busbar and inspect the result in real time. The catalogue lists a 14-second cycle and modules from 1640–2550 × 990–1450 mm. Send your piece drawing and material grade to get a firm quote.

Integrated layup and bussing

SC-Solar's integrated machine takes strings straight from the stringer, aligns the cells, lays them out with overlap and irons the busbars in one station. The catalogue lists a 40-second cycle, 35 kW peak and 15 kW average power, PLC and CCD vision control, and glass from 1640–2550 × 900–1450 mm. It suits lines short of floor space; compare it with separate stations on equal terms.

Automatic busbar welding

SC-Solar's auto-bussing station corrects cell position and welds the busbars that join the strings, with false-weld detection, flux monitoring and nozzle backflush cleaning. The catalogue lists a cycle of 15 seconds or less, 50 kW peak and 30 kW average power. Busbar punching and black-paint removal are extra-cost options, and the glass-size line needs a drawing before you quote.

Vision-guided string layup

SC-Solar's vision-guided layup machine picks finished cell strings and sets them on the glass, with flipping, cutting and repair feeding offered as options. The catalogue lists ±0.3 mm string placement, ±1 mm glass positioning and a 30-second cycle for twelve strings on modules up to 2520 × 1410 mm. Quote it with your string pattern and the stringer that will feed it.

EVA repositioning and local pre-melt

SC-Solar's EVA repositioning station straightens film and glass before string layup, then tacks the film with four local hot-melt points so it stays in place on the way downstream. The catalogue lists ±1 mm correction accuracy and a cycle of 15 seconds or less for modules from 1650–2550 × 990–1450 mm. It prepares the stack; the full encapsulant cure still happens later in the laminator.

Glass loading and paper separation

SC Solar's glass loader takes packed module glass off the pallet, separates and collects the interleaving paper, and cleans off static and dust before feeding the line. It handles modules of 1650–2550 × 990–1450 mm at a cycle of ≤12 s, draws 10 kW and weighs 6000 kg. This is the loader at the head of the line, a different machine from SC Solar's second-glass layup station. Trial breakage and cleanliness on your own incoming glass.

Automatic busbar layup-welding station

The DHJ-C welds the busbars that join cell strings during module layup. Machine vision locates the strings and a flexible hold-down clamps them while welding. Yiheng names 60/72-cell, double-glass and half-cell modules with 5BB, 9BB and 12BB patterns, a cycle of ≤25 s and breakage under 1‰. Send your string layout and ribbon spec to get a quote.

Laboratory electric-heated laminator

The TCAE-DF-55 is an electrically heated bench laminator for small modules and material trials in the lab. It has a 500×500 mm working area, 6.5 kW installed, room temperature to 160°C, PLC touchscreen and selectable modes. Buy it to test encapsulants and recipes on coupons and mini-modules; full-size production needs its own trials on a larger press.
